I am still in college and I help set at the universities climbing wall which is only about 500 square feet and the program director only lets us reset the wall 3 times a year which is very annoying for anyone that climbs there even once a week.

So imagine a small wall with poor turnover rate with holds that are greased up by a majority of newcomers that do not use chalk. In my experience with this setup I would personally reset the whole wall at least every 6 weeks if I was allowed.

Anyway, great article and yes turnover is very sexy!

my route turnover looks like this. we have three sections to our bouldering area yielding 140 problems. Each section gets changed at least every 3-4 weeks.

Routes get changed when we get there. My staff and I put more time and energy into creating new movement on the walls, not just the same lines with a different difficulty and clean holds/tape. This way, we dont get many routes that suck ass, turnover may be around 4 months but the customers are happy becasue the setting is challanging, different and creative.
