Mammut-EMS Bouldering Championships
February 22nd, 2007Filed in Comps
The first comp in the 2007 Mammut-EMS Bouldering Championships series is being held March 2-3 at the New Jersey Rock Gym in Fairfield, NJ.
The routesetting and forerunning crew for the series will be:
- Jason Danforth: Head setter for the New Jersey Rock Gym
- Pete Ward: 12 year Pro setter & comp organizer
- Tim Kemple: Pro climber and photographer
This crew has been working together for years and has found a system that enables them to pump out 120 redpoint problems and 20 pro division problems for the event.
For this event they’ll also get help from New England local setter Hank Jones and Earth Treks Manager Kary Williams. They will integrate other setters in Salt Lake City and Boston. The crew is also putting together an invitational event called the ASCI Showdown in Western Maryland June 30th.
The Tour
The tour has stepped up recently to fill the void left by the now defunct PCA. It’s the only independent Pro climbing series in America and is growing in popularity with three comps held in New Jersey, Salt Lake City, and Boston.
The Gravity Brawl will have a $5k pro purse for the pros and many thousands of dollars in gear prizes for the recreational divisions. The Summer Outdoor Recreation Show event in SLC will have a minimum $5k purse (working on 10K) and the tour championship in Boston will have a $10k purse.
Pete Ward says “I can’t really even keep track of all the fancy jackets and stuff that Mammut and EMS give us, but we really get hooked up from our contributing sponsors with silly amounts of gear. Always fun watching some kid walk away with three other friends helping him carry all his swagâ€Â.
