The edited interview (above), and my original responses to Mike's questions, probably did not make things very clear on this. I build for two types of client. ONE: Commercial facilities and smaller structures where the client is looking to use the wall for training and/or retail use by "real" climbers. TWO: More decorative walls for city parks, YMCA's, health clubs, schools, etc. where the wall is there more for looks and as a marketing tool than for the type of use that gyms routinely get.

The latter is where I do the sculpted and highly-featured structures.

I don't think that that type of surface or terrain has any business in a real gym unless it's on the front desk or a similar location where it's sole purpose is decoration.

Sorry if I mislead any of you. I'm all about flat surfaces and cool angles when it comes to gym design and construction.

Hey Louie, thats a good question.
I just got done setting an EP wall that was highly featured. Makes for a challanging setting session. I like big, flat, open spaces that allow me to create movement that isnt constrained by stupid features.

Hey Louie,
Thanks for the interview and thanks for all the sweet shapes over the years. i really like your latest stuff with So Ill and Climb It.

I have another question for ya. Above you talk about helping design highly featured walls. Do you feel these types of walls have limited routesetting potential? I have allways thought a simple wall with flat surface allows the most options for the purist setter. I guess I was just suprised to see that you are into the featured walls. They sure do look cool, but super expensive...which is good for you I suppose!

Take care, keep at it...don't ever quit giving us cool shapes to play with!
Cheers,
Matt Lambert
