A problem I come across from time to time when setting routes using specific themes, is finding the holds that I want. You may sit at a wall for an hour just staring at it wishing you had a certain hold. We've all done this. I consider two main things when this happens.

1. Would it hurt to add in another style? I truly believe routes with multiple styles bring a route to life. Example, start with a few solid static moves and then mixing a good dynamic move right into the center of your route can add an entirely new dimension to it. Climbing is supposed to be fun!! If it wasn't, then none of us would care about it. I hate sitting on a route where every move feels the same as the last.

2. Is your route worth the frustration? You may have a beautiful line with beautiful holds but if it doesn't come together then what's the point? You can always just suck it up, take the holds off the wall, and move to a new wall with some different angles, features, etc. Sometimes taking an entirely new approach to something is exactly what you need. I understand that a lot of people are hesitant to do this and it is sort of a 'If all else fails'... but that doesn't mean it isn't worth considering.

Being a setter in an older gym it seems a bit harder to convert over to the increasingly popular color schemed setting for all routes. It also seems a bit restrictive.
Recently we took one of our slab walls that is most commonly used for belay lessons and a kids climbing wall and took all of the holds off of it.
It had been set using less desirable holds filling every hole, therefore still making it very easy for beginners to make it to the top. We decided to reset it with easy routes using holds all of the same color. Because route turnover is slightly longer on these walls this option seemed a great way to keep the wall looking nice (no tape rags hanging all over), and get people who don't usually use the wall onto it. We plan on doing this to a few other walls in the gym.

When I first started setting I found this an easy way to get going.
One of my favorites (for the kids) was a rainbow route. The colors more or less faded through R - O - Y - G - B - V. Since it was a new gym I had an easy time finding nice vibrant colors.
