My workshop is intended to help people learn, themselves.. how to better learn.. and teach others..

It has long been a challenge for new setters to learn the tradecraft, and equally, if not more challenging for experienced setters to understand how to best convey their own knowledge and skills efficiently - ie.. how to take what seems intuitive, and transfer skill sets and understanding of setting and movement - practically. Also challenging is, once a setter knows they know some things, how do they continue to improve themselves..

In the description I wrote up, which will shortly be on the CWA site, goals for my workshop include:

Conveying effective techniques for how to train other setters; Suggestions for mentoring programs; Evaluative methods for gaging ability and performance; and ways to focus on improving competition-mentality routesetting generally.

The 2 pre-conference workshops are:

Training Your Routesetters - By Chris Danielson. I'm not exactly sure what Chris is teaching. But I'm sure it will be awesome.

How to spice up your routesetting - By Mike Helt. In this workshop setters will learn how to set imaginative, out-of-the-box high-profile problems. We'll also go over how to rate these spicy problems and the pitfalls and pluses.

Both of these are half day clinics on May 1st.

There could always be more workshops, so keep an eye on the CWA website.

How about adding a hold-shaping seminar (taught by Louie perhaps)? Not that there is any shortage of people putting out amazing new hold shapes out there, but I know a lot of people who'd like to have a few of their own designs up there on the wall. Get a hold company to sponsor it, and everyone who participates in the seminar gets their hold poured and takes a few home.

Wacky idea maybe, but I'd love the chance.

Aside from the setting certifications, what else is going to be going on of interest to setters specifically?

You mentioned two pre-conference setting clinics. What will those be about?

Thanks for the info. Inquiring minds want to know...

Any word on the setting certification course coming to AZ? If not, I may have to get to the CWA. Not the worst thing :)

This looks like a really interesting summit. My girlfriend's brother is the manager of a small gym, and it's always been one of our pipe-dreams to open our own gym or possibly a co-op one day. Obviously, attending a clinic like this would be the best way to learn what we'd be getting ourselves into. Unfortunately, my student income doesn't allow much extra cash for these sort of things, so it might have to wait until after graduation.
