that is a concern of many. but as this becomes larger there will be more people that can certify, and then it should be pretty easy to get at least a level one certification. i believe the right track is being taken.

It is nice to see the climbing industry becoming more unified. The route setter certification and climbing wall instructor certifications are a definite step in the right direction. My only concern is availability of clinics to obtain the certifications!

I think the certification process is a big step in the right direction for professional route setting and gyms. You're going to start to see a trend towards this sort of continuing education, quality improvement, and certification among the more progressive and successful setters and gyms.

Indoor climbing is growing and your customers are going to become more demanding. As that customer base you snagged in the 90's starts to make money, they are going to want to spend it in a gym with a good environment and quality setting ... I know I do.

I'm not sure who is lining pockets in this industry, but I guarantee it's not the folks putting these things together. The people that love this industry the most and are spending the time and effort to improve setting/indoor climbing make less than you might think.

Now, where did I leave the keys to the USAC Escalade?..

I thought the prices looked kind of cheap .. They are certainly more accessible and fair to some of the smaller gyms and climbing communities.

A few years ago Tony Yaniro came to town for the USAC clinic and certification. I had already been in a handful of other route setting clinics over the last decade so I thought I'd check this one out too. Man it was nothing short of awesome! It really opened my mind allowing me to get to that next level... I got a card too. For me it's like a badge. A medal of honor.

I'll take it again next time it comes around. Guess I just like route setting that much.

Oh yeah.. the card (along with my other experience) has given me a bit of clout to host several local route setting clinics of my own. I made enough in those to cover the USAC clinic costs. And have a little money left over for more climbing and setting gear! Sweet!

Let me just put out there that anyone who believes that anyone in USAC is 'lining their pockets' is severely confused. No one in the organization is in it for the money. In fact, almost everyone involved in USAC is a volunteer. The organization is trying to further American competitive climbing so that those people who love it and love the community (as those volunteers do) can one day make a living at it, as trainers and workers in other sports do. I am a coach and a setter and I love it. Unfortunately, I can't afford to live on what I make. I'm not trying to live fancy, I'm trying to get by. Right now, I'm applying for other jobs just to make ends meet. Do I want to sweep floors at the local Drug Fair to make ends meet? No, but I'll do it in exchange for the ability to continue working in the field I love. The higher ups at USAC are working to professionalize the sport so that people like me don't have to sweep floors and can instead dedicate full time hours to the sport about which we are passionate. No, this certification won't bring in lots of money, but it will do a lot for demarginalizing the sport and making it so that the next generation of climbers (and hopefully the current one) can support themselves in our amazing industry.

yea I have a laminated card for my work. I own a small company, and yes I had to go get certified. But that card was $200 dollars a one day class and a total waste of my time. It was a cram session. Never the less I have never pulled it from my wallet. But the state forces you to have one for what? They want to generate more income. As a volenteer setter this card I dont need. Unless its going to generate a whole lot of extra income which I dont see happening. I like to participate For the comps, but if it means being certified may be you people at the USAC should sent setters to the comps. Out of your pockets. A card isnt going to make me a better setter. but Lois Andersons book helped.

Lenny - Part of any profession is continuing education. Usually this involves paying at least something if not a whole lot more than what the USAC is charging for theses courses.

There are a lot of things in the indoor climbing industry that are trending towards making coursetting an even more viable career. This is just one more of those things. I have heard from plenty of people that they believe they wold not get much out of a course like this, but there is no way to know unless you check one out.

If all you see as the benefit is a "laminated card" it seems you are being a little close minded.

Looks like my setting days are coming to a close. Personally I dont feel the need to spend money on a laminated card. I think its another way for USAC to line there pockets. Come on why not a free seminar huh. I would travel for that. Or at least make it a little easier on the pocket book.
