Montaubon Recap

The 6th stage of the Bouldering World Cup usually looks favorably upon the host country. But the French just can’t catch a break this year.

At the Montaubon edition of the Bouldering World Cup this weekend the French and just about everybody else was destroyed by the Rusians and one sick strong Japanese girl.

Even Austrians Killian Fischubber and Anna Stor, who have been dominating this season up to this point, didn’t even come close to the podium.

But it was Japan supergirl Akiyo Noguchi and Russian Yulia Abramchuk that came out of the blue to go head to head in three dramatic rounds. But in the end it was Noguchi that triumphed and came away with a brand new gold medal.

Naguchi sent every problem making no mistakes and the only thing that stopped Abramchuck from the gold was not sending the last bloc back in qualies.

One the Mens side the Russians dropped the hammer and came away with the top two spots. Dimitri Sharafutdinov came in first by sending three of the four finals and Rustam Gelmanov tagged the second place by working hard and sending all the blocs in semi’s.

Italian Chief Setter Alberto Gnerro, legend Jacky Godoffe and French wrench slinger Marc Daviet took up the task of placing the 35 women and 64 men into 6 final spots. And they did a good job of it; finishing the event with no ties which made for happy climbers and 2000 spectators.

Ranking

But what matters now are the rankings. This being the 6th of 7 bouldering World Cups the ranks are pretty much decided. Which might explain the seeming poor performance of the top competitors.

The Austrians Killian Fischubber and Anna Stor, both coming in near the bottom of the pack, are still holding the number one spont in the boulder rankings and will must likely stay there through the last bouldering event in Moscow later this year.
