Get Psycheder!

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Photo: PetzlDuring the dog days of summer it can be a drag to go into your sweltering gym and set routes for hours. I’m sure most of us would rather be outside swimming with girls than schlepping plastic around.

Setters in general are a psyched bunch of people. But even the best of us will succumb to the creative-draining power of summer. So Routesetter.com has complied a few videos to help you get psyched… no psycheder.

The Show Must Go On

As route setters we’re more than just hold slingers. More than just monkey wrenches. Doing more than just creative hard labor.

We’re also comp organizers. As setters we’re in charge of the show, the spectacle. Many times while watching a comp I’ve felt like a stage producer. With the walls as my stage; the routes and problems my props; the climbers as my unwitting actors.

Setters have been writing this script for decades and there are some who do it better than others. One group of organizers that are better at it than most are the setters responsible for the Dutch Bouldering Championships, other wise known as UrbanClimber.

Here’s a awesome video compilation from the last three years of the UrbanClimber.

If Maud Can Do It…

How could we expect you to get psycheder without a few wall kickin’ Frenchies! The Freestone Contest, in its 9th edition, is one of those great regional comps that snub their nose at official sanctioning, iso and rules. But what they do have are interesting problems and lots of passion.
The video starts out slow but picks up. Check it.
