Through all the incarnations of USA climbing, the organization has never had a strong idea of what a successful route setting program looks like and even less how to run it.

Even under the watchful eye of Tony Yaniro, the patriarch of American route setting, the program had only sporadic success and floundered. This had more to do with a lack of vision on the part of the various American sport climbing organizations then with the Yaniro methodology.

But since Yaniro’s quiet, and unofficial retirement, a new band of setters have picked up the proverbial baton and have started a renewed push to legitimize American route setting.

I recently received an email from Chris Danielson, member of the USAC route setting committee, about the future role USAC will play in the development of American route setters.
