Here is a real stalactite we have in our gym

(sorry that the foto is not turned)

With a single foothold near the bottom you always have a no hands rest.

there is also some evidence of why you should be able to acces the back. :-(

here is a hexagonal stalagtite we made a couple of years ago. it turned out to be a lot of fun for a small time.

In it's original position it could be fixed to the wall quite easy. the part that on the foto is the back part can be taken off and fixed to the wall. the stalactite then can be attached to this part and screwed on place on each of the six sides. The problem was that the existing wall had to be reinforced to take the momentum.

We ended up fixing it to the side.

My plan is 30 inch square base, four even sides like a pyramid, 2.5 to 3 feet tall. Also a flat top (bottom) that takes a hold will allow access to interior during construction. I have an idea for an interior steel support but it requires a weld. Have to bride my contractor friend first.

How big were you planning on going Cranky? If you do build one, Id be excited to see the outcome of your work. There are a few places where one of these could be used at our gym.

This has been done many times before.

Your biggest considerations should be a solid connection to the existing structure, and making the base footprint large enough to spread the leverage loads out of climbers using the new feature.

Have fun and post pics of your progress.

I am thinking of building a "stalagtite" feature out of wood and metal and wonder if anyone else has tried it? I have some ideas about how to fasten it but appreciate any experiences and problems I may not have forseen.

thanks
