tongue in cheek of course.

The price of buying big holds like jugs and then shipping them is so high that I wonder how hard it would be to make a shape or two to mold and then pour just to use in the gym. No intention of being a company, and making complex designs, just a basic jug which can be reproduced for easy routes.

Please point out why this is terrible idea, (including toxicity of fumes and a vast inexperience) or if it is not that hard to do, let me know about your experiences.

thanks

Do climbing gym employees tend to have health insurance offered to them by the gym? Do those of you who are climbing gym owners out there just insure yourself and your family, or do you offer your employees an insurance package?

Any information on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi All,
I'm hoping to get some opinions on gym's policies regarding climbing with your shirt off. Some gyms I've been to require their climbers to keep their shirts on in the gym. Others don't have a policy regarding attire while climbing.

Personally I'm torn - I love taking my shirt off while I climb, but there is nothing I hate more than a group of brahs with their shirts off grunting up problems and flexing all over the gym. It seems that it eventually becomes a part of the gym's culture and detracts from the community(especially for new climbers). So I support a shirts on policy. Opinions?

Anyone have any recommendations on some open-source software that would work well for online gym route cataloging? I know there are some good pay-for products out there but I'm researching other avenues.

Looking for:
1. interactive gym overview
2. easy administration by routesetters/managers
3. social-media interactive (facebook)
4. gym members comment and/or rating system
5. possible plug-in capability to WordPress
6. MySQL back-end
7. Java enabled (not Flash)

I know everyone is tired, but, how'd it go?

Bitching, bragging, concerns, observations, all of it--- I want to know.

We just finished up with our show at the Bloc (Rocks and Ropes 2nd location) in Tucson (division 2) and I can't say enough good things about how our Chief ( Luke Bertelsen ) ran our setting crew. He brought in a great gunslinger out of CA, Nohl Hackel, who was invaluable to making our event as great as it was. The rest of the team really stepped it up with really well thought out problems. Full separation, flashy movement, and smooth transitions kept the climbers and audience happy and excited.

We had a couple of ankle incidents, no technicals, and a few appeals( which I think is fairly common).

Spotting at high level comps seems to always be an issue, what kinds of protocols does anyone have in place to facilitate volunteer spotters?

We hired a professional video/photog company to document the event so, hopefully, there will be a good bit of eye candy to show off soon.

Open up on your stories!!

I'm working on opening a bouldering gym in my town, and real estate seems to be one of the trickiest parts to make decisions on. Since it's only bouldering, my height restrictions are pretty tame. My main hang-up right now is whether a lease is acceptable (which would drastically lower the amount of capital I'd need to start with), or if it's better to try and own. My fear is that with leasing, there's always a chance the owner will perpetually raise our rent, since we'd be so structurally committed to the location that he could get away with it (or flat-out run us into the ground).

And if ownership is the better option, I'm not even sure how that works. You can't finance a commercial building just like you would a home as a new company, can you? Or is the only acceptable option to find an investment large enough to buy a property outright?

It's times like these I wish I could just put the gym in apartment...

So........

There are a myriad of hold washing methods. I am personally a fan of a pressure washer as I think that they get holds the cleanest out of all of the options. Granted this is not a water efficient method of cleaning holds. I have never used SO ILL hold wash, and have never been overly impressed with dishwashers due to their lackluster cleaning and the fact that they are not really made to take the abuse of non-stop use and loads of chalk/ shoe rubber gumming up the innards.

I am interested in any and all hold washing methods that are out there.

Specifically I am interested in whether or not anyone has a dishwasher brand/ model that they have had luck with. I have heard that Bosch and ASKO are better than some of the more common brands.

Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to make The Big Hold Company List into a more useful resource, so, I split it up into smaller lists by region and added a few more after some web searching. I always appreciate updated info/etc... for this list. I'm interested in adding old/defunct companies as well to the defunct page just because I find it interesting. A few say "until they stop spinning", others say "until it's physically impossible to turn the wrench any more". What's the industry standard for foot pounds of torque for your standard climbing hold?

Hey setters,
I have been following along for the past six months. Now I finally have something to post about. Now if this has been covered somewhere on the forms I didn’t find it so please forgive me. However, I think it might still be worth covering again. So I here is the “what” and below is the “why” if you care to read it.
What I’m looking for:	What moves can you expect of a climber at each point of skill level. I.E. what move can a 5.8 climber do that a 5.7 climber can’t? Please try to have an outdoor route that provides credibility. I.E. there is a route in Red Wing, MN called “looking for lust” 5.9 that classic 5.9 lie back route. http://www.mountainproject.com/v/looking-for-lust/105825151 Therefore, we know that a 5.9 route indoors can have lie back moves.
I worked at VE in St. Paul, MN for the past five and a half months. They have recently brought on a lot of new setters, including me. I have to say the training established setting team that was there was great, but with opening a new gym across in Minneapolis they needed to grow the crew fast. Again props to the current setters for the clinics they put on, they were great. Over all, the routes in both St. Paul and Minneapolis gyms have not suffered, with the infusion of new blood and sweat. One thing some of us new setters struggle with, me especially, is grade appropriate movements. One of our top setters Andy N. is broken and with his free time off the wall he has gotten to work with, AKA mock, me a bit about some of the moves I force on my 5.9 and lower routes. As we were talking about it the other night setting, he said he was trying to make a list, for all the setters, of what movements a climber should have at each grade. That way as a gym of setters we know if we are setting a 5.6 we can only use moves from the 5.6 list. (No point in having a 5.5 list because that is nothing more than a ladder of really positive holds) However, if we put up a 5.10a we can use any move from 5.6, 5.7, 5.8, 5.9, 5.10a lists. I.E. if we put up anything 5.9 or harder we can include a lie back, but not on a 5.8 or lower no matter how good the feet or juggy the hand holds, because a 5.8 climber probably won’t have that in their skills set yet. Not only will this make the routes more consistent across the same grade in the gyms, but also help new climbers learn the movements as they progress up the grades indoors that will directly transfer to the same grade outdoors.
Thanks for any help you can give me and our gym and keep the good topics coming.

***** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*****

Entre Prises Climbing Walls to Partner with USA Climbing
Jan 5, 2012

Entre Prises Climbing Walls and USA Climbing announced today that they are collaborating to bring a new bouldering wall to the ABS 13 National Championships. The event will be held on February 24/ 25 and March 2/3/4 in Colorado Springs, CO at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium. Competition climbing is continuing to grow here in the United States and we continue to support these athletes as they showcase their talent.
USA Climbing and Entre Prises have been working together for the past few months to come up with a concept that will excite competitors. The design is based on simple shapes that will give route-setters a great canvas to work with.
“Entre Prises is helping USA Climbing achieve its goal of bringing our marquee events into non-traditional venues by providing a system that is functional, aesthetic, and easy to set up. The short term and long term viability of competition climbing is much stronger thanks to EP.” Kynan Waggoner, Operations Director, USA Climbing
The 2012 ABS National Championships will mark the thirteenth season of national competition for USA Climbing’s American Bouldering Series. More than 600 talented athletes will vie for national titles in the Open, Youth, Citizens’ and Team events in the nation’s most prestigious bouldering competition. This event will also select the U.S. National Bouldering Team that will represent the United States at the 2012 International Federation of Sport Climbing World Championships in Paris, France.
“Our partnership with Entre Prises, the world’s leading manufacturer of competition climbing walls, will give USA Climbing athletes of all ages the opportunity to compete and excel at the ABS National Championships. We are very appreciative of the investment Entre Prises has made in USA Climbing and the growth of climbing in the United States.” Keith Ferguson, CEO, USA Climbing.
Established in 1983, Entre Prises Climbing Walls has manufactured climbing structures known for their beauty, complexity and quality. With more than 5000 walls built worldwide, Entre Prises has been building climbing walls for competitions such as ESPN X Games, World Cup Events and The Coupe du Monde de Difficulté Series in Chamonix as well as countless installations around the globe.
“We are very excited about this opportunity. Entre Prises has been involved in designing and building competition walls throughout the world for decades and it is great to finally work together with USA Climbing here in the States.” Adam Koberna, V.P. Marketing & Sales for Entre Prises, USA.

My name's Dietrich, I live in East Texas and I (along with two partners) are in the process of opening a climbing gym. I've already found some pretty good info here and found a couple of good things to think about that I hadn't thought of before, so thanks to all for putting good info on this forum, and for any advice you may give me directly, as I do have a couple of questions.
Not exactly route setting specific, but perhaps someone can point me in the right direction?

1) Does anyone have experience with the insurance program offered through the CWA? If not, any recommendations for ins. companies that won't look at me like an alien when i say "indoor rock climbing"?

2) Ventilation and air circulation is obviously a big deal, can anybody shed some light on what works for them? I talked to one mech. engineer and he couldn't seem to grasp the concept. I'd just like a little insight before I get into interviewing contractors and subs etc.

A little background: we're still in planning phase, haven't received funding yet (investments) but have several interested parties already that would make up at least half the funding. Working on the last of the budget details currently, land is really the last deciding factor and we're waiting on some confirmation on spot we like. This is the first time owning/running a business for all of us, although we collectively have experience in management and sales, and two of us have worked at summer camps so we're used to the whole "kids with ropes and heights". I'm looking forward to the journey, and I'm always open to learning. Thanks again!

At Youth ABS last year, some of the spotting was terrible. A number of individuals were injured due to poor spotting. I spoke to one "spotting" volunteer that had never spotted anyone before and had not gotten any training. Injuries also frequently occur at the Divisional and Regional levels.

It's a bit of a shame that judging has certification, setting has certification, coaching has certification but spotting is done by well meaning volunteers with little or not training. There's not even an instructional video or manual on "how to spot at competitions".

Can we set up a system where spotters are trained and briefed (probably by one of the route setters) before a competition and that teams are required to provide an experienced spotter volunteer for every x kids that attend a competition?

Hi am researching/planning to start a climbing gym. It will hopefully be somewhere in europe in 1,5-2 years time:) location is a secret :)for now. I am trying to have all the planing, financing and preparatory work done in 6-9 months time. Is this feaseble?
ill be doing it at the same time as my routesetting job (halftime jobb only).
I have about 250.000€ to my name which i will all invest, my partner has 50.000 € which he will invest. Is it possible to construct a 1500 sqm climbing gym(wall size )(with only clean plywood walls no gimmicy "real rock" structured walls) built in a least space? We are willing to maybe borrow 200,000€ we would rather not have any addtional investors. We are saving additional money so we will be able to work the first year with no pay what so ever. I have been working at a climbing gym for 5 years mostly setting but also with other stuff and think i have sufficient knowledge of how to run my own place. all advise is welcome!

Am I in to deep or is it possible
Cheers Henry

Im finding the process of getting my level 3 is growing more difficult than I had anticipated. I've noticed that there are something like a 100 people with there level 2 but few with level 3's and very few that have the National Chief Cert. I realize that there are not alot of comps in general and even fewer higher end comps like Regional, Divisional, and Nationals. I just wanted to get a census from the other setters on this forum how this was affecting them and some ideas that might make it possible for people who are close to getting that next certification to make it happen. Thanks for the help.

If so, how do they hold up? It is only $90 for the set, which seems like a good deal if they don't break down and if they have enough power. Any input asap would be appreciated.
