I'm new, this is my first post, I'm helping build a gym at the middle school where I teach. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations as to what drill was most ideal for screwing in the cap/hex bolts for holds. I was told not to try and screw in 500 holds with a hand held wrench. Suggestions appreciated. I saw the impact thread but not a lot of actual drill names were used. Plus, impacts sound pretty heavy duty. My guess is that I'd get them mostly in with a drill and then hand tighten? Sorry to sound so clueless but I figure if I can't ask here then I can't ask anywhere. Thanks!
best drill (screw that)

I have used the Bosch 12V Lithium Impact Driver for a couple years now and I love it to death. I got a combo kit (Impact Driver, Driver, 2 batteries, charger, and case) off Amazon for around $160 (it looks like the price has gone up slightly...link below). Most "big-box" stores sell just the Impact for $199.
The impact will handle EVERYTHING that you throw at it in the gym plus the standard driver helps with set screw without having to change out bits from your impact. It is by no means "heavy duty" when it comes to size and weight...only in performance. It takes some getting use to. Have to watch out for cross threading t-nuts and damaging holds (topics that have been well discussed here).
Take a look, read other reviews, but IMHO this is THE best impact for setting.

I, too, use the Bosch impact driver. The thing is absolutely amazing. It has more then enough power to tighten and loosen all the holds and the battery life is pretty substantial.
I purchased one through Amazon and the drill comes with two batteries. Perfect for leaving one on the charger while your working. The power remains pretty constant right up to the battery being fully drained. There really isnt a steady decline in power as you use it, just kinda drops off right near the end.
Ive used several Makita impact drivers with similar results, I think the Bosch felt a little heavier but it is definitely a very versatile driver that produces great results.

Hey Slate
I have had a 12v Bosch impactor for over two years, and the 10.8v Makita for over a year and I have to say that the Makita is my favorite. Its a little lighter, has nicer grips, and i really feel that the batteries hold up better than the Bosch. I dont think you'd be disappointed by either one, but check out the Makita if you get a chance. I've actually got two 18v lithion Makitas and they are hands down the sexiest things i have ever used. Unlimited power and 3 amp hour batteries means I can put up 1000+ holds without recharging. Great if your stripping/setting big caves or setting big comps. Just don't ever let a nube use them-they can pull a t-nut right through the wall.Posted 2 years ago #
