He mentions in the blog how Magnus Midtboe placed 8th after semi's but was not entered in finals. Meanwhile the 9th place (american born) competitor was.
I honestly DO NOT understand the reasoning for this and im hoping some of the americans on this form can weigh in!

I understand the reasoning but it seems like a stupid rule to me.

I understand the rule a little better. But it is a ridiculous rule.
If you want to have 6 americans in finals then you need to allow every one else. If the six americans placed 4,5,6,7,8,9 would they cut out the top 3 competitors?
Here's a simplified explanation:
Because it's the American Nationals, they need 6 Americans in the finals. Anyone who qualifies top 6 from another country moves into finals, but they still need 6 Americans, so that's why they took the 7th and 8th place qualifiers.

except that
Alex and Magnus were tied in the semi's ( No countback, otherwise Magnus was 8th and Alex was 9th) and they took Alex and not Magnus. They even (deliberately?) misrepresented the result so that people would think that alex had finisched 8th and magnus 9th,
Obviously the Americans want the majority of finalists to be from America, but if your willing to bump international competitors out of the competition its not fair, and the international competitors shouldn't be aloud to compete.
I am obviously not Magnus, or friends with him or even know much about him as a climber (except Ali Hulk) but if I had travelled to another country to compete in a competition that was open to international competitors I would be pretty pissed if I got robbed of a chance to compete in finals.
I am not trying to start a fight with ABS or anything I just think certain parts of the rules need to be reviewed. I would say something like this doesn't look very good on a country that is trying to host more international events.

So Sean bumps one USA climber... that means the guy who came seventh gets to compete in finals. Now there just so happens to be a tie for 7th place, therefore both USA competitors get to advance, as per the rules state. It also just happens that Mitboe ties with the 7th place guys.
They way I read the rules, Mitboe should advance. If you read the rules, he tied with the other 7th place guys.
I wonder if there was an internal decision made, not to allow him to compete due to Non US residency.
Maybe I didnt read it thoroughly or maybe there is something Im missing.
BUT either way Im not sure how much of a difference it makes? Mitboe wont represent the USA!
"21.3.5 The competitors ranked 1st through 6th place in each category/gender shall advance to the final round. In the event of a tie for 6th place, all 6th
place competitors will advance. If a non-U.S.citizen competitor advances to next round, the next ranking U.S. citizen competitor for each non U.S. citizen competitor placing 1st through 6th will also advance"

Nobody got bumped, exrtra american climbers are added.
the first 6 climbers are placed for the finals. As within these 6 climbers 2 non american climbers are presen the next two american clibers are also selected.
It happends to be that both these climbers are tied in 7th place, together with Magnus who is not american and not in the top 6.
So all international climbers can make it to the finals as long as they are placed 6th or better.
on another note, does this now mean that daniel W. cannot compete at vail world cup? or only as an alternate? arent we only allowed 6 competitors as host country and the others 4?
Daniel will advance to Teva we usually take 15 climbers to this comp I have never seen where it was less then that number. Daniel would also be able to compete in IFSC comps if he wishes if we don't have more then 3 from US signed up that are ahead of him already signed up.
Also remember he won the comp (Teva) last year so I think he has a automatic bye to it.

I don't know the rules about who USA climbing sends to the world cups. so maybe woods has a bye, or not from usa climbing.
Internationally you have 3 spots + 3 extra if you're the host country + the 10 best athletes from the world Ranking (woods is placed 21st). But as long as there are less then 100 registrations in each category anybody can participate.
So in reality each country can send as many competitors as they like to each world cup.
@Herman, sorry, "bumped" was the wrong word to use I guess... but I agree, Mitboe should have been in Finals!
Mitboe shouldn't have been in finals because he wasn't top 6 and he isn't an American, which means he did not have to get picked to go into finals.
The comp organizers didn't do anything wrong by not allowing him in finals.
I agree with the decision. It's unique that our sport lets non-Americans compete at all in the U.S. national championships. If United States Track and Field let everyone compete at the nationals, you wouldn't see any Americans in many different events.
