Hey,

We have Finally decided to move forward with expanding our little gym here in Newfoundland, Canada, and we have decided that instead of building the gym ourselves, like we did the first time, we would like to have a Wall manufacturer come in and do it with us.

We have never worked with a wall manufacturer, and essentially I am just looking for some feedback from you guys about who you think would do the best job.

I do not want to pin one company against another, just looking for honest experiences, good and bad. Who you think would give us the best bang for our buck, and who seems to be producing the most durable system. As well, Id like to emphasize that setting experience on these walls is very important to us, we want walls that we can constantly change with volumes, and that are not going to limit setter creativity in any way. Visual impact is a must, but not the most important, and we are also looking to build a wall that would be suitable for national or potentially international bouldering and lead competitions.

I would start with Walltopia or Rockwerx. Eldorado Walls is another company. I couldn't tell you which one would be the most cost effective, but those three are what come to mind when I think of state-of-the-art walls with cool angles, competition walls, and the ability to move around volumes.

I would say Walltopia. My second choice will be EP and than Rockwerx. Walltopia's wall will give you the opportunity to attached volumes everywhere. With Eldo and Rockwerx its not quite the same.

Vertical Solutions makes visually stunning walls with creative angles that look very clean and can take volumes or other modifications anywhere because they are wood. John Stack is a master at bending wood (think the SLC Tradeshow in maybe 2008, The Front, The current UBC wall--for USAC Bouldering Nationals, the Noreaster, the Central Park comp; and the bouldering at the new gym in Reno).

Walltopia is awesome as well but all I've seen from them lately is fiberglass and it is not as nice to screw volumes into fiberglass as it is into wood because for strength you are limited to putting in screws in line with (so in between horizontally) the bolt holes because that is where the fiberglass has wood backing strips. I think they also do wood?

Yes they do plywood. But the good thing is that their texture is good for installing volumes everywhere. Not like the cеment one.
I believe at the end all that matters is quality and price,so you need to obtain a few offers and samples.

I would suggest staying away from the NICROS walls. They are on the less expensive side of the range, but I have never been impressed with their product. Their ART walls are very limited when it comes to setting. It has a "natural" look so there are a ton of features, but significantly reduces setting flexibility.
I've been to (or worked at) several facilities that have their Westcoast walls. These things are junk. They look pretty at first, but instead of staining the cement prior to applying to the surface the wall, they paint/airbrush the surface. This quickly chips/peels when you strip the wall. Also, though it is textured, it is not a uniform plain. Unexpected divots/humps reduce setting flexibility. T-nuts are either extremely deep (which has lead to easy breakage of older or resin holds due to torsion forces) or are missing t-nuts even though the hole has been drilled(this is from a newly built wall). They also don't work with your autobelay supplier (if you are using one) to maximize wall usage. But since their walls are cement surfaced, you will likely stay away from them anyway due to your volume usage criteria.

I'll second staying away from Nicros. That's what my gym has, and the thing is falling apart. I took off a huge chunk of the cement just by pulling the tape off, plus the inconsistencies in the flatness sucks to set on. The wall is only about 5 years old. We're getting the whole thing refurbished in December, but I wish the university would just tear down the whole wall and start over with something that we could actually screw into and use volumes on.

Is visual appeal is what you're looking for, Walltopia is the way to go, just stay away from the fiberglass and real rock textures!

Really glad to hear that Wallnuts is expanding!!nSend me a message if you're looking for another setter for the grand opening...although I live in Ottawa, I have a loy of family in Newfoundland.

Thanks everyone for the help.

We are just getting quotes in from companies now, still haven't hammered out exactly who we are going with but we think we know who we like the most.

Thanks also to the companies who saw this post and sent me personal e-mails with suggestions and quotes, It's rad to see everyone helping out on our little deathstar.

Hey Kaleb, Im a huge fan of Vertical Solutions. They look amazing, take holds well and are some of the most interesting walls I've climbed on.
