sort of a morph of the sandstone theme.. this set has a little of everything. I carved it with the idea that these 5 holds could be set alone as a short boulder problem, or used as most to augment existing collections.

The holds are..

One big jug/roofjug.. great one to start a route from sitting with.
three pinch/crimp/sloper's depending on how you orient them..
and one big pinch or in cut ledge. can also be set upside down for a difficult under cling or for the batch of crimps up top the climber would have to choose from..

This is sort of a "bang for your buck" set.. every hold has two or three different functions minimum.. so home climbers would have quite a few options.

I don't know how to go about this but this set will likely take a while for me to get to pour if I ever do.. so if there are any companies out there looking to pick up a few shapes, I'de love to see these guy's made ;)

anyway, just thought I'de share.. Feedback is totally welcome

The shapes look nice... but in the pictures, it doesn't look like there would be enough material underneath the washer.

Thanks :), On the thinnest hold there is over 5/8ths of an inch of material under the washer, and that's a conservative estimate..the two bigger holds have over an inch

all of the holes I drilled are really only deep enough to cover The head of a bolt, The smallest hold is only about an inch and a quarter tall.

I like those shapes, I'm a huge fan of the natural curves. Those look like they would be pretty cool to climb on. Your description sounds kind of like mine, holds having more than one usable point on them. I like it, more bang for your buck.

food for thought for all you cheap hold makers out there.. two part urethane foam in 2-4lb densities has a great texture if you get the mix right, and if you don't mind the occasional bubble.

it's a pain in the butt to carve with alot of detail, but for big sloping rounded shapes you can hit with sand paper after you carve it, it works very well..

The benifit of using two part is pretty obvious.. a gallon of 4lb density yeilds something like 4square feet expanded, and while there is a fair amount more scrap than if you bought a block, shipping is considerably cheaper, especially if you find it at a fiberglass or marine supply shop..

this makes BIG cheap hold preforms possible..

just started to recently, I tried before with the crap that comes in a can, but it stay's too rubbery and is a royal pain to work.

so far I've poured two holds shaped with the two part foam and both have a nice texture, relatively easy on the hands, but plenty grippy with a little chalk.

The foam I've been using is advertised as 2-2.8lb density, so I'm wanting to try some 4lb as I believe that's the density most hold shapers use of their foam.

You should all look at Escape climbing holds... they have shapes almost the same... Check it.

Sorry to be off topic, but does Escape Climbing have any affiliation with Nicros? Some of the shapes look somewhat similar (even the logo a bit?) but I have never personally climbed on any Escape holds. Not a knock on the company, some of their sets look very nice in fact.

Both are out of the twin cities. I think that escape likes the way nicros does its logos so they are doing something similar.
