So of course these are great for stripping but are many gyms using them around the country to put up holds also? We do here but the noise and cross threading is a major deterent.
Impact Drivers

With our concrete walls (serious dust) and less-than-top grade t-nuts, there is no way we could use drills/drivers for setting. T-wrenches or stubby ratchets only.

just bought a bosch 10.8 and use it for setting and striping, and love it, will never go back!!

We use impacts and I have found that the people who DON"T set with them cross thread more often. If the impact mechanism kicks in before the hold is tight, back up and tap it out or change bolts.

impact drivers are the only thing that allow me to continue setting.
they allow me to hit our numbers, set efficiently, and make it cost effective to the gym. they turn the often time tedious task of setting into a productive, rythmic, activity.god bless you impact drivers

There is the same risk of stripping bolts/t-nuts with impacts, wrenches, and ratchets. It just comes down to paying attention. Feel it get tight before the hold is against the wall? Back it off, check the bolt, check the nut and solve the problem. Why is that so hard to figure out. ARGGGGGG!
The noise issue is more of a problem specific to impacts. Keep the impact of your impact (ha) low by setting early, off hours, or other times that seem appropriate.

in my experience using a impact driver does generate a bit more cross threads, But you almost immediately know it. and are in time to reverse.

I used to use wrenches until I got a hold of a light weight impact. Now I'll never look back. The time efficiency of the impact is impossible to beat.

We need silencers for our impactors i think!!

HA - I got it, wrap carpet padding around it?!!? that ought to dull it down (while overheating it!)

tried it

Thanks! I know impacts are the way to go...I am trying to put together a convincing argument for my GM because he is concerned with the noise and threading issues.

I start the bolt off by hand to make sure I don't cross thread and then I impact it in on a low setting and then hand tighten. Good t nuts are needed for this otherwise I've seen them just get shaken from the wall

The learning curve in using an impact is pretty steep. It doesn't take much use at all until you are no longer really worried about cross-threading and such. As mentioned above though, when using an impact you know right away if your threads are crossed and can correct it prior to damage most often. With a ratchet or T-handle the damage is usually already done when you realize it.
When talking to your GM, you should stress the efficiency of using impacts. For stripping holds, it should be an absolute no-brainer as they are WAY faster. For setting though, they also really speed things up and get you far more setting for your money. Even if he remains concerned about the possible T-nut damage the cost savings should be clear.
I would suggest purchasing one or two 18-volt cordless impacts for stripping use and then leave it up to your regular setters to provide their own setting tools. More often than not the smaller impacts are more convenient to set with (more compact and lighter), but often lack the torque required for some stripping uses. Having both on hand is the best option overall in my opinion.

We have a couple of impacts and they are great for stripping. 10.8 v Bosch is a bit weak - but good for small jobs like screwing on jibs. I agree that 18 v is the way to go. The DeWalt impact is kick ass - but pricey. Still, if you can afford it, get it. I've found we can actually over-tighten and even break holds on our concrete walls with an impact so we normally set with wrenches and ratchets. Haven't found stripping to be quite as much of an issue with drop-ins.
Also - a tap is worth it's weight in gold for stripped t-nuts. Just be careful not to break the tap off in the t-nut (done that before).

Quick question, where are you guys finding the hex bits for your drivers? My gym has a few bits, but no one seems to remember how or where we got them. Ive searched a few local hardware stores but no one seems to have anything like that.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Auto stores always have them!!
I have a couple of 4 inch hex bits on the way I am super stoked!
I do not know any auto shops in the states but we have like "peridot" here they have that stuff.
pep boys? whatever... you know what i mean.

I have heard from a reliable source that Eldo Wall Company actually tested the potential damage done by an impact and someone using a wratchet and the impact was less damaging. Now, I can't provide a link and I am working on confirming this as best i can. When I do have a link I will post it!

Bosch 10.8V is the safest bet if you're worried about cracking holds from overtightening or stripping T-nuts (esp old, tired pound-ins). It gives enough juice for >90% of the battery charge, except for:
1) A lot of old, small, low-profile martini bolt holds that really need cranked to stay put. But these usually need a set screw anyhow, regardless of what was used to tighten the bolt.
2) Driving tapping screws or really long wood screws. Not everyone can/is allowed to use screw-ons as much as I do, but if you do, the tiny Bosch simply isn't heavy enough to quickly thread these types of screws, and you really have to lean on it to drive them home.Besides those two issues, I love it- it's light, relatively inexpensive, charges quickly, and tightens almost all holds enough so they don't spin on our birch walls, whose clear-coat spray on texture has long since worn away in many spots, making them a lot slipperier than most walls. What you should really be worried about causing damage is inexperienced setters with wrenches who tighten a hold and then continue to crank and crank and crank...

I love calling tapered bolts "Martini. Never thought of calling them that but it makes total sense!
I have the 12v Bosch drill and driver combo (Amazon $150) and it does EVERYTHING that I ask it to do, stripping and setting.
