   super psyched to get this going. we used to have one on the USAC site, but it has died off and this way it is open to more people.
   i will start off.
   my name is tyson schoene and i have been running the vertical world climbing team based out of seattle washington. i took over the program in 2002. we currently have about 50 team members between our gyms. we have won the national team title for difficulty in 2006 and the team title for bouldering 2008, 2009, and 2010.
   i was one of coaches for the US climbing team from 2005 until 2008. i attended the youth world championships in beijing, imst, ibarra, and sydney. also the continental champs in denver 2006 and montreal 2008.

   im psyched to share and receive information on this site.

   Finally! Thanks to all those involved in getting this forum up and running!

   This is Avery, and if you don't know me I am the assistant coach at the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) in Portland. I've been coaching in the Pacific Northwest Region for 4 years. Prior to moving to MAC this year, I was the head coach for the Youth Team at the Nike World Headquarters.

   Our team is 12 strong and growing. I'm always looking for ways to support the Pacific Northwest Region and the kids in it. You'll find me on Facebook and occasionally tweeting #pnw and #climb as 3shotslatte.

   Kyle van House here reppin' Stoneworks over in Beaverton. I'll be trying desperatly to fill the monster shoes of Molly Beard and Carl Miler. We have a relitavley small team this year but super stoked and wanting more! Next year should be great and hopefully a few more equally psyched kids.

   I've been climbing for three years, competitivley for two years in junior, going only to divisionals both years.

   Looking to see things flourish among the PNW coaches and hopefully nationally. It will be magic when it does... I see a little sprout already! Cheers!

   Davy Shaw: Team Charleston Head Coach
   I have been Coaching the climbing team at The Climbing Wall @ James Island County Park in Charleston South Carolina, for the past three years. This year is the first year that we had a competitive team compete in the full SCS series with ten competitors. We had 5 compete in the Southeast Regional and 3 in The Division 4 Championship this past weekend with one qualifying for Nationals in speed. Which for our first year as a team is a big accomplishment.

   I am glad this forum has been put together so we can trade ideas and tips to making our youth climbers the best they can be.

   Mike here from Alaska. It was great to finally put faces to names the other evening. Glad to see the forum up and running.

   Have been coaching with Ted Phelps for five years now. We've been able to compete in Divisionals and have sent at least one kid to Nationals every year since we've started.

   When I'm not helping coach, I draw pictures all day (own a design business) Like most people in Alaska you try to do as much as you can in the summer... climb, bike, fish, trail run, etc. When winter rolls around and stays for a really long time outside activities turn to skate skiing, ice climbing, traveling outside (out of Alaska) and trying to stay as active as possible so you don't go insane. My son & daughter would argue that it hasn't helped!

   Would love to see more kids (and coaches) come up for our comps and we'd love to send kids down. I'm betting on the economy!

   Glad this venue is available. We all have something to share that will help others. Ultimately it's just climbing... the beginning of a hopefully long and enjoyable climbing career for all our kids!

   EDIT: Didn't realize this was in the Coaching section. Sorry for the cross post! I would like to get into coaching at some point though!

   Zach Wahrer, setting out into setting and teaching climbing. Just got my Level 1 Routesetting cert and will hopefully be getting my AMGA CWI cert in September. Currently living in BFE, TX, with hopes of moving to the Front Range within the next 6-12 months and get a job setting and teaching. So stoked on climbing and setting, its amazing how much fulfilment and joy they give me!

   Glad to have found this site. Definitely a valuable resource. I'll be lurking around! ;-)

   Hello all, this is Teagen from Portland. I'm so excited to see this forum started!

   I've been climbing for about 8 years, and coaching for 1.5. I'm currently head coach of the climbing team based out of the Nike campus in Beaverton. We have a really tiny team made up entirely of the children of Nike employees, but we have a lot of fun and are hoping to grow! Aside from climbing I run quite a bit, read books recommended to my by the kids on my team, and eat a ton of cereal.

   It was great to formally meet all of you PNW folks on Sunday!

    My name is Kaleb Thomas from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

    I am an ACMG CGI Level One. I used to coach the lower levels of out gyms junior program, kids aged 8-14, but did not this year due to other responsibilities at the gym.

    I was a member of the provincial team here for two years, and hope to start coaching it this season.

    I currently teach A majority of the courses at our gym, excluding lead (which i assist) and our anchors course, which i don't.

    I currently coach a female over-twenty climbing team, called the mantel piece vixens.
    It is a casual thing that allows me to practice making lesson plans and training programs, and gives the girls some structure.

    Mike Rougeux: I coach the team in Bend Oregon out of the Inclimb gym. I've been coaching the team for the last three seasons. The team had 5 kids when I took over and I'm super psyced to have 13 kids now who all seem to be getting stronger than me! I work for a climbing/mountaineering/ski guide service which means that between that and coaching I talk about climbing more than I climb.

    I'm really interested in hearing what common issues we all come across and how we can address them. The more education and knowledge we have in our field the more legitimate our "jobs" can become.

    Joel Anderson. Head coach of Steepteam at Steepworld Climbing Gym in Billings Montana since 2006. We've got about 35 kids in the program of which 20-25 attended ABS regionals this year. We used to focus on SCS, but this year we switched to ABS largely due to our gym being a bouldering gym as well as the team wanting more outdoor climbing experience in the spring months. We send 1-2 kids to nationals each year.

    Currently an Architect by day, been climbing since 94. Love all disciplines and encourage diversity from team members. I also act as our comp organizer and head comp routesetter. Looking forward to learning some new tricks.

    This is brilliant.

    While I missed the Coach's Symposium last Saturday night - slinging beers to folks down at Rogue where I work - I heard it was monumental for the community and motivation of our coaches and teams.

    I'm Alana. I've been breeding some rope guns at Clubsport for three years now and like all of you know, it's the best. I've also been setting at CS for three years, and at the circuit for a half a year. Just wrapped up my Level 1 Cert this week actually! I'm an old JCCA competitor who learned everything from competing, to trad, to setting from Molly Beard. Besides coaching/setting/ and waitressing you can find me most of the time working for Portland's Water Bureau, hiking out in the woods collecting water samples, or procrastinating at my desk and writing on climbing forums.

    That being said, these kids are my inspiration, and the familiar faces I get to see year in and year out are all awesome. Tyson, thanks for putting this together - big high fives on your part.

    Here's to the '10-'11 season!

    Brannon Glenn. Not currently working at a gym but guiding various adventure trip here in Arizona for the Arizona Climbing and Adventure School. I spent several years managing a climbing wall, coaching a climbing team, and working as head routesetter in Prescott, a smallish town in Northern Arizona.

    Before coming to Arizona I lived in Seattle (where I grew up). I gym ratted at Cascade Crags up in Everett where I learned how to climb, set, and be a whore for the owner (no offense to Mike or anyone else...I was young and loved it anyways).

    I am seriously missing setting and coaching kids. I would consider the work close to the top of my list of my favorite climbing activities. I really hope that I can find my way back to a town with a gym in the next couple of years. In the mean time I keep trying to do work as a mercenary setter for some of the gyms in Phoenix.

    My name is Josh Hodges and I moved out to the PNW last summer to help Tyson as a coach and head setter at the Vertical World in Everett. I grew up on the north shore of Massachusetts where I worked at several small walls and an adventure camp before landing a job at the newer of the two MetroRock gyms. That is where I got into coaching while working to build an interscholastic high school league, made up of about 15 schools, which will be going into it's forth season this fall.

    I've absolutely loved working with the VW kids this past year and hope I've been helping keep them as psyched about climbing as they have for me. I look forward to getting to know the rest of coaches in the region over the coming years.

    Mike Surma, climbing coach for the Circuit in Portland, OR (aka. "the bus driver" I have had the honor of carting a large portion of the kids and gear around for the spring / outdoor season). I started climbing about 2 years ago and then began training with the team under the direction of our then head coach Matt Slayton. Over time the team has grown substantially and as a result I have moved into a formal coaching role with a focus on teaching climbing fundamentals to our young / new team members.

    I love working with all the kids from the PNW as well as the Circuit and having the opportunity to share my passion for the sport with them. They inspire me with their drive and motivation which I hope I reflect back to them via my passion for climbing.

    I am looking forward to getting to know all of the coaches from the region and using this forum as a vehicle for sharing experiences.

    In addition, I am the team photographer and post photos of competitions / climbing trips on flickr.

    Hey everyone! This is Joey from the Rogue Rock Gym. I was super stoked to go to the coaches symposium during divisionals, and then I was super bummed to find out that I couldn't attend... I was at a Level 1 training for a high ropes course company called Synergo. Although the training was a blast, I am disappointed that I missed the meeting. Anyway, it sounds like everything went well, and now there is a forum!

    As far as my introduction, I have been climbing off and on my whole life, only taking it semi-serious since 2003 (you know, doing pull-ups and other serious things). I have been coaching Team Rogue for 3.5 years, and managing the gym since last November. Most of my coaching experience has been through wrestling; however, I have enjoyed the similarities and the differences between the climbing and wrestling. Last February we just started the climbing team with all new members who are very young and very short! (Please add extra feet for the little guys). I am very excited for this coming bouldering season! The kids are working hard and having fun!

    first of all, the p*rtscum timbers can suck it, as was apparent the other night in a beating dealt to them by the Almighty Sounders.
    second of all, yes, it was awesome. i drove down that afternoon and took mike and marlowe to the game. we were in the section closest to the MAC. we like to call that the Winners section.

    I'm Josh Sicilian, Head Coach at Texas Rock Gym in Houston, TX. Our team, Team Natural, is about 30 members, and a total of 4 coaches including myself. I've been coaching for about 2 years, climbing for the past 5 or so. My coaching past started in wrestling in the NE. I think this will be a valuable asset to coaches all over the country. Other than reading "Coaching Climbing" and attending symposiums, there isn't a lot of information about coaching this sport.

    Hello everyone!

    My name is Dan Fenner and I am the head coach at The Stronghold Athletic Club, where I have been coaching for almost 5 years now. We are located in downtown Columbia, SC.

    Team Stronghold is dedicated to providing a safe and encouraging environment for students age 10-18 to get fit, get moving, and get vertical. Our goal is to produce life-long climbers who posses the skills and knowledge to confidently navigate stone surfaces across the many climbing disciplines.

    In recent years, an increasing number of Stronghold climbers have participated in the ABS and SCS in-door competition series. This has prompted me to change our training dynamic and create a separate program for competition climbers. My goal for this upcoming season is to get my competitive students out of South Carolina, and onto more real rock.

    HI everybody, I´m juan From Argentina. I´m a climbing trainer (+15 years) and a national route setter here in Argentina. I train climbers from my country and some from all over the world (most from Spain). I´ve been setting about 12 years.
    I work as a route setter in national and local comps, and in november I will be setting in an event in mexico (called iRock) after the Petzl Rock Trip.
    Hope I can find here useful information to improve my skills!!

    Hello!

    Long time lurker here at routesetter.com. Figured I should finally sign up and add anything if I feel so inclined.

    Route setter for three years. Starting setting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Have since moved to Vancouver, BC and continue to set a couple times a week. I also help coach a Jr. Team, ages 12 - 17. In the past I have also worked with younger kids in Junior programs, ages 9 - 14. I have many years of experience working in outdoor education, focusing on team building, development, and facilitating groups in the outdoors. Many of my outdoor experiences have related to climbing.

    I've found this site to be extremely helpful, and a great learning tool. It also a good way to keep up with the main concerns, responsibilities, and issues that relate to setting, how a commercial gym operates, and the direction that the sport is moving.

    Looking forward to learning more!

    Well, guess I should post here. I'm Jesse, and I climb and set routes mostly in the PNW, although I have aspirations to do it elsewhere! I just love routesetting and would do it all day if I could. Right now between my 'real job' and actual rock climbing I travel around a lot, but I set at the Rogue Rock Gym with Joey for a few years.

    I also have a setting and movement analysis blog where I write walls of text that no one reads. Mostly I started it because I loved reading this site when I was first learning to set, and now that it's stopped updating it seems like it's hard to find good, dense sources of information on setting.

    If I have one, my signature move is the thumbdercling. =) See you guys at the wall!
