Any coaches out there with a handful of climbers in different categories at Nationals figure out what their doing with iso? With a running iso it only opens once. This means as a coach you can only enter one time for the entire day. For me as an example I have a youth d, youth c, and two youth b climbers. Having a hard time deciding on what I see as my two choices.
-Check in to iso at 9AM with my first climber and then stay until my last climber goes out at 8PM. This would mean the climbers would start their warm-up on their own at Movement.
-Get my climbers warmed up at Movement and send them on their way to iso for the last 30 mins before they climb.
This would be a great time to have an assistant coach!
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

I agree this is going to be very hard for a lot of us.I am in the same situation I have kids in D,C,A,B & JR. There is no way we can go to Movements and get to the venue in a flash if there is a problem with one of our kids. I do not think they have thought this situation through. I guess if it was a perfect world we could all trust one another and allow the coaches to come and go as they please through ISO and the Venue. It is way to hard not being in the same building and there really in not much as far as a warm up area at the Venue. We really need to think up a better solution to this situation before friday.I have an Idea you could hire someone to warm the kids up at movements I dont think they need a coaches certification to be there seeing that it is not a offical ISO . If anyone is interested let me know I know some climbers that could use the extra cash.

I have kids in youth D and Junior - that could mean all day in iso and without seeing the kids climb.
But I think the bigger issue that needs to be brought to attention of USA Climbing is the overall approach to it's coaches and climbing growing as a youth sport in the US. Coaches are already held to a higher standard and, as such, should we not (among other things) be allowed to enter and leave the venue at will? Also, why are coaches unable (by rule) not allowed to speak to their climber(s) and actually coach them/encourage them between routes while they are sitting in their waiting chairs/ stations? Of course discussing beta would be out of the question but just make THAT the rule instead of the other.
I think the problem comes in as not trusting coaches. But that has a negative effect on the competitors - especially the new ones - who really need the encouragement and coaching and support at that moment.
This iso situation is just an example of that untrusting culture towards coaches that needs to be changed.

Aaron I totally agree with you. In Gymnastics the coaches are allowed to talk to their competitors and in almost every other sport. There has to be trust !This Venue situation is not set up the best for the coaches and athletes . I am stil trying to figure out how it is going to work. I will tell you , you do not want to be stuck in secondary ISO all day it is a very small wall with a small amout of holds thrown up on it.I hope they will allow us to leave iso in between each age group and enter when the new group comes in.

Aaron/Puccio,
The reason I see it is well deserved. don't think for a second either of you would hesitate from tellin your climbers just a little bit of beta before a climb.
We see unethical behavior from coaches all the time! I won't be name droppin here but we all know there's a coach out there who has used certain "secret" phrases with their kids on the wall, lets not forget the grey area of that east coast coach and taking his team to another division, the loud mouth coach who can't help but scream a foul when any of their kids fall do to "reach issues". I can go on and on. And don't even get me started with "US. Coaches are already held to a higher standard and," BS! show me one upstandin, perfect coach and I'll show you a drunk and a near pedophile.
Climbing coaches are the whiny little girls of your sport, who will do anythin to promote themselves and their teams. (Excluding a few coaches of course) sorry but one bad apple IS enough to spoil the bunch.

I think most of the USAC coaches will agree with Puccio and Aaron - most of us care enough about the sport and the climbers to be professional and fair. If a coach isn’t, they should be ‘disbarred’ from a USAC coaching membership and the allowances it grants.
If this sport and the athletes participating in this sport EVER wants to be recognized as a professional sport, line of work, or legitimate enterprise - the USAC organization, Athletes, supporters AND coaches need to start behaving like PROFESSIONALS.
Coaches are now a part of USAC as much the athletes are and the USAC should recognize this.

What prevents a person from entering the Competition venue looking at the boulders, going to momentum and speeking to the climbers?
Is Momentum gym actually part of the isolation?
If that is the case then someone should accompany the climbers from the gym to the competition venue. This person can take back coaches.I don't think that talking to competitors in between boulders should be allowed. there is no way this can be controlled so that the boulders are not discussed. In this point the coaches cannnot be trusted. I've seen enough international competitions where coaches are communicating with theit climbers (in russian langage or by signals or by screeming "left foot"). So sorry, you can't trust the coaches.

With this whole iso thing.....On Saturday the coaches were allowed to go into and out of the comp venue iso. So its good that the USAC is trusting the coaches more at this event. However, as a US team coach, I was disappointed to see a coach who did not get his requirements fulfilled to be allowed into iso......only to be in iso. There was no enforcement of the iso from the entrance by the bathrooms. I saw parents and other competitors walk back there.
So there are coaches who despite whatever they agree to on a "code of conduct" continue to do whatever they want.
One thing I rely on is that (most of us) are more than a coach. We are a role model and someone who our kids trust implicitly. Breaking the rules (no matter how small) only reinforces that its OK to do what you want. What kind of example am I setting by not turning in my cellphone when going into iso, yet expect my athletes to do so?
To be honest, in the past I have been tempted to spew a little beta to my climbers....but what are we (as coaches) accomplishing with that. I know we want to see our athletes get the results we feel they deserve.....but doing that is bullshit. It may not put the best kids in finals or on the podium, but those are the breaks. Many times in other major professional sports, the best team does not win the championship. IMO, there is more at stake by showing my athletes that a small amount of cheating is OK. There is more at stake here that getting said athlete to semis or finals or whatever.
Comp climbing in the US is in its still at a grass roots level, but its up to those who give a shit to take the organizations shortcomings and their strengths and make it the best it can be. If you are only going to bitch and moan about everything that is wrong, please leave. If you want to help and do your part by adhering to the rules, a code of conduct, and provide your athletes a positive role model, then I am glad you are here.
It seems like majority of the newer coaches in the organization want to do their part by pointing out the inconsistencies of the USAC. These are the same coaches who have never picked up and read the rulebook, and waste time at a coaches meeting by asking questions that they SHOULD already know the answer to.
With MR.DICKS comment about most of us wanting to promote ourselves and our teams,....why the hell would we NOT want to. For many coaches, this is our job through a gym or its our own private business. When I get a kid to reach their potential and stand atop the podium, I would be foolish not to promote that. Your comment is idiotic.

With regard to Hermans post, I had a parent on the team from some eastern block country I cannot remember......but she would yell at her kids while climbing and no one knew what she was saying. I had even talked to her about this, but to no avail.
Yes, there are coaches who will cheat. So kick their ass out. Bill Bellicheck (sp) was fined and suspended? for cheating in the NFL. It exists on all levels.
Get rid of the bad, and keep the good. Its a process that every organization has to go through.

Glad USAC "opened" up the iso on sat. I have to say it didn't really end up mattering to me that much anyway since the soft iso time allowed me to warm my athletes up at the Spot and then walk over and have them go right into the staging chair in iso.
As I've seen on this forum that setters want to be treated as professionals so too do a majority of the coaches I have worked with. Granted I've only been doing this for 5 years and have not had the pleasure of being a US Team Coach but I can't help but feel that some of the newer coaches are uninformed due to a lack of communication from USAC. I know that the information is out there and I've been lucky enough to have a great RC and other experienced coaches in my region that are more than willing to help, but I think it's more of a lack of coaches seeking out that information. It would have been great if the coaches meeting could actually accomplish more than having the chief judge repeat a lot of information that a majority of us already know.
I have to say I was disappointed to overhear a coach "coaching" from the stands. However, I was pleased to then hear one of that coaches climbers correct them and say " you're not allowed to do that". As Joe stated, we are more than just a climbing coach to some of these kids and I could never picture myself telling my climbers beta before they climb as the message that sends goes beyond a climbing comp.
Oh.. and Joe, please don't knock on my Patriots. I know it's hard for people to like a team that is so good and a coach that is so rad that he only wears cutoff sweatshirts when it's -15 and snowing! And you're right the best team doesn't always win. Otherwise the patriots would be superbowl champions every year.
