so i have a buddy that is starting to pour grips and asked me to do some shaping for him. my question is, what are considered the standard tools and/ or materials for shaping? thus far he has just been buying foam blocks from a craft store, however i am sure there are better materials. any beta?

depends on the aesthetic and style desired...low density and high density foam serve different purposes and yield different features. The tools ca range from ceramic knives to your hands...grab utensils and experiment, and you will find a style gain experience that cant really be conveyed through a forum, dont forget your mask either...

Jason Kehl's website, cryptochild.com has some videos of him shaping. I think you can learn a lot just by watching those short little videos...
