I've noticed lately that very few climbers in our gym spot their partner while bouldering. this is a little disturbing considering the pommel horses that are uncomfortably close to our 45 deg wall. Obviously we have a belay certification process, but has anyone ever tried a spotting check as well?
I used to go to the Spot a lot when i lived in boulder and i don't recall any safety process other than the waiver.. that was a long time ago though.
I wish we did have some sort of spotting check, because it can be tight quarters and really packed on a weeknight. Unfortunately, with any rule, one must have a way to enforce it. It's easy to have a floor monkey walk around and make sure folks are belaying properly, but imagine how much mommying you would need to force people to spot.
I believe that the best you can do is encourage folks to 1) ask for a spot when climbing if they think they need one, and 2) provide a spot to other climbers, even if not asked for. It might be a good idea to at least teach people how to spot when they first fill out a waiver.
