We have been using Square Heads for 6 or 7 years now. I find that they strip out really easy compared to the fillips head but we still use the Square heads for some reason. I think i want to switch to fillips but the process of it will be a pain in the ass. Going through the gym over a slow stripping cycle and having to switch bits to take out the old ones and replace with the fillips sounds like no fun at all! If you ask any construction worker they will say that fillips is the way to go! What do you guys use/think?

I'm on the same page, get the deck screws they're generally black and they don't strip at all!
Also I have a dewalt screw holder (it's a sleeve attachment) so you don't drop screws

Yeah i though about doing that actually. Ill pick up some of the black deck screws and see how they work. Also...is this(ClimbingHoldReview) Jeremy D? If so Josh and i just finished filling out the Interview for B.A.Gear. Thanks for Interviewing us, How did you find out about B.A.Gear?

I prefer phillips head for a lot of stuff and im a fifteen year carpenter. But there are these epoxy coated square head deck screrws that rock on many functions. Depends on application

Also depends on how proficient you are at holding screw gun straight!!

lol. I agree to that. Ive recently had to teach a few people to set routes and you can tell they had no idea how to use a drill. They would spend 10 minutes just trying to get one screw in and get really pissed that it wouldn't go in and kept striping. People need to learn how to hold a drill straight.

any benefit is probably outweighed by the inconvenience of having to switch bits. at least that's the way i see it

my gym has both robertson and philips screws.
Before i got my impactor, i used robertson drill bits for the robertson screws (the difference is the head of the bit tapers out... for whatever reason i dont care), but when i bought my impactor the guy at the store who knew way more about tools then me said get a square head drill bit.
This did make a huge difference, the square bit (which as i said is different then a robertson though they look the same) is not tapered at all and runs straight on all four sides, meaning you get really good contact, meaning no problems with screws stripping.
i Prefer the robertson or square screws better then the philips as i find the screw will stay on the drill bit longer, which when your hanging in your harness from a 45 degree wall reaching behind your head to put in a screw, its really nice to be able to put the screw on the bit, reach all the way back and screw it in.
sorry for the long post but thats my 2cents.

I’m a furniture maker, wood working instructor and hold maker. Robertson heads are defiantly the best screws. If you have a problem with them striping, the first thing that you should check is that the driver head is still nice and square, the next thing to look at is the quality of screw that you are using and the last thing that you should look into is the size of screw you should be using at least a #8 and if you can’t get them to work you could switch to #10. If you still have problems you could pre-drill both threw the hold and into the wall. Also it is much easier to use a long shaft (about 3inches) when using a screw gun it seem counter intuitive but it will make it easier to keep the drill in alignment witch will stop the bit from slipping.
Have fun screwing

T 25 Star bit. Hands down WAY better, no stripping. If anyone does not have these yet it is well worth it.

I,ve used them all. T25 Star bit beats both Philips or Roberts(square). The extra cost is made up in not wasting screws striping the heads out. I also find you can reuse the screws for a long time untill the threads start to wear down. Always always always predrill period. They make these nice tips that let you a one handed swap from drill bit to driver bit with out having to unchuck anything. The nice ones even have the add feature of beveling the hole for you as you drill. No more worring about a screw lip sticking out. Check the decking area of any hardwear store. Lastly, always always always predrill. Please for all that is good use T25.
